The big attraction on this night was the NZ Super Modified
Champs and the first page of the program dealt with the scene setting that
is nearly always the standard for such publications .
I wasn't at the meeting nor was I a close follower of
the open wheel classes in those days having been captivated by the
rough and tumble of the stockcar class that raced at
other tracks .
My understanding is that the Super Modified class was
the fore runner of both the Modified and Sprintcar classes that we know
today.
How or why they drifted away from the original concept
I don't know for sure but the cynic in me suggests that it was probably
brought
about by some of the drivers looking to what the Americans
were running and buying in an advantage over the local product .
Gradually the class became american style sprintcar dominated
and the Super Modified class as such met it's demise only to be
revived and and promoted as a poor man's sprintcar class
soon after and running at the stockcar tracks rather than the open
wheel tracks |
